HOUSEBOATS /KETTUVALLAMS - BACKWATERS OF ALLEPPEY - 900 KM
TRANQUILITY Backwaters of Alleppey is an intricate network of innumerable lagoons, lakes, canals, estuaries & the deltas of forty-four rivers that drain into the Arabian Sea. Over 900 km of this labyrinthine water world is navigable. The largest backwater stretch in Kerala is the Vembanad Lake which flows through three district & opens out into the sea at the Kochi Port. The Ashtamudi lake ( literally, having eight arms ) which covers a major portion of Kollam district in the south , is the second largest & is considered the gateway to the backwaters. Kettuvallam is a country boat that was used in the early days for the transport of goods from the isolated interior village to the towns. With the advent of roads, bridges & ferry services, gradually the kettuvallams went off the scene. Now these kettuvallams are back again as a major tourist attraction. A ride on a kettuvallam is a fabulous way to explore the fascinating beauty of backwaters. A Houseboat is about 67 feet in length & has a width of around 13 feet in the middle . The materials that go into the making are all local & eco friendly ; bamboo poles ,coconut fibre, ropes, bamboo mats ,carpets, etc. The main wood used is 'Anjili'.

There are houseboats with fully furnished Single room , Double rooms & Triple rooms. All of them have sun deck, with comfortable chairs, kitchen & attached toilet (European Style). Traditional lanterns are used as lights. The crew includes a chief & two oarsmen. The cuisine is of traditional Kerala flavour along with the local specialties; delicious fish & prawns .There are Single Bedroom Houseboats for Two people and Two Bedroom HouseBoat for Four people. Another feature is sundeck for sunbath. The sail steered, wind powered boat that takes you along the enchanting paddy fields, picturesque river-banks and remote hamlets to provide a glimpses of Alappuzha's rural face. The Byzantine maze of backwater gives Kerala its Colour, Vitality & Beauty. Pooja Tours And Travels organises inland Cruises on HouseBoats (the traditional Kettuvallam) on the Alleppey-Kuttanad, Alleppey -Quilon belt of the Backwaters. A Breath takingly stimulating experience. For Kuttanad is one of the worlds rarest place where the cultivation is done below the sea level. And Alleppey is known for its narrow canals & snake boat races, including the colourful Annual Pageant-Nehru Trophy Boat Race which takes place on the 2nd Saturday of August every year. To lend comfort to this romantic cruise, every kettuvallam has a drawing cum dinning room, a bath attached bedroom & a kitchen. Of course there is also plenty of open space for you to leisurely gaze at the wonderlands of Alleppey & kuttanad.

The water web slowly opens up its secrets to you, lush paddy fields, pregnant palms. Singing Siberian ducks & the ancestral music of fishermen. As the sun sets, drop anchor at any place that catches your fancy & let the lullaby of the distant waves of Arabian sea echoed from the inscruitable Western Ghats put you to sleep. Most of the Houseboats use Lanterns as Lights. But some Houseboats are fitted with solar panels and hence it has small fan and lights in the Bedroom.
